A message from

PRODUCING DIRECTOR, GILBERT CATES:

Welcome!  We're in the middle of a great year at the Geffen Playhouse.

We've closed out 2008 with two productions as part of our season - Beethoven, As I Knew Him and By the Waters of Babylon, and are now celebrating the holidays and ringing in the new year with a special return engagement of the wonderful Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone

As for the rest of our 08/09 season, we have two world premieres - one a new musical by Jonathan Brielle, which I'm thrilled to be directing over the summer, and the other a commission from Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies, which is up next with previews beginning on February 3.  Our cast is dynamite - Anna Gunn (currently on ABC's Breaking Bad), David Harbour (a Tony Award winner for Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?), Alicia Silverstone (who has been on our stage twice before) and Robin Thomas (who's recently been on Damages, but who you may remember from his stint on Murphy Brown).

Coming up after that is the West Coast premiere of the recent Tony nominated play The Seafarer by Conor McPherson (and directed by our own Randall Arney), which will feature Emmy Award winner John Mahoney.  Finally, we close out the season with the aforementioned new musical Nightmare Alley, which is a spectacular journey into the world of carnies and cons.

I encourage you to spend some time on our site to learn more about each of the productions, and ultimately, I hope you decide to come on board for the rest of the season.

When we program our seasons, we carefully choose playwrights, subjects and styles that enhance, enrich and engage each other. We encourage all our ticket buyers to become season subscribers because that allows you to see each play not only as an individual work, but also as part of a larger picture. It allows you to become part of the dialogue, part of a vision and part of our family.

But, I’m jumping ahead for some of you … If you’ve never been to the Geffen Playhouse before, I can only hope this stop at our virtual home compels you to come experience our world-class productions and spectacular setting firsthand. We’ll be waiting for you …

See you at the theater,
